The Ivy

The Ivy

Friday June 8-Friday June 15, 2018 Double Issue Friday Sports Wrap.

It turned out to be a simple weekend of golf for Mark Anderson and Paul Peterson.  In the early 80’s they were both single and living in the Cities. Mark’s lake cabin on Big Cormorant was their destination combined with golf.  36 holes on Friday at Hawley, 18 at Detroit Lakes CC on Saturday and Sunday, 36 holes at Hawley on Monday. 108 holes of golf, sans cart, in 64 hours.  After an incident in 1988, too lengthy to describe here, but name worthy, The Ivy Open was born. With the exception of two years, due in part to family obligations, friends have gathered in early June to practice fellowship, their golf games, and the art of giving each other shit.  Courses have changed, the number of holes has decreased, but the banter remains strong.

This morning at about 8, the men below gathered to put tees in a hat, to determine their groups and hecklers.   If you think the premise for the movie, “ Groundhog’s Day” was an original thought you are incorrect. There isn’t any plan to buy a bottle of champagne and have the last living foursome celebrate the event, but it could happen.  We are on the far side of 30 years with no reason to quit.

Larry Seljevold once said, “Tradition needs no caretaker.”

Men need fellowship.  A common link between men who have done deplorable things is that they are often labeled as loners, or outcasts.  Fellowship prevents that. Therefore, using simple logic, fellowship saves lives.
